One studies health in relation to work; the other studies exposure in the environment. Prevention needs both.
The physician's contribution
The Occupational Health Physician designs surveillance, assesses fitness, recognises patterns, manages referrals and rehabilitation, and advises workers and management while protecting professional independence and confidentiality.
The hygienist's contribution
The Occupational Hygienist anticipates, recognises and evaluates chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic exposures, then recommends and verifies controls.
The bridge between them
Exposure results should shape surveillance. Health patterns can in turn signal where workplace investigation or control verification is required. This bridge is the basis of the Exposure-to-Health Loop.
This article draws on occupational-health principles and themes in Dr. G. Jayaraj’s Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 and Central Rules, 2026. Interpretation is the author’s professional perspective.
